Love Thursday | French Cheese

3219228522_6c78166913

I have been on an Italian kick for a few weeks now.  But, this week,  I had a huge craving for French cheese.  Aka, fromage.  I remember how much I love it- and decided to dedicate a Love Thursday post to it!

Voila!

Italy certainly has some simply fab cheese- Bufala Mozzarella, Pecorino Romano, Parmiggiano Reggiano.

But France.  France has hundreds of delicious cheeses.

6a00d83545496553ef00e5529780e88833-500pi

Goat, Bucheron, Brie, Bleu, Gruyere, Camembert....just to name a few and scratch the surface.  Care to see a list?

General Charles de Gaulle was quoted as saying "How can you govern a country which has 246 varieties of cheese?"

I don't care as much about the governing, as much as I care about the cheese.  I would love to eat my way through the long list of each French cheese, before I die.  Or maybe I should say, I'd like to die trying.

Nothing is better than grabbing a selection from a Parisian cheese shop, stopping for your French baguette on the way, and plopping yourself down on the banks of the Seine in Paris to have your picnic.

A pungent, hard crottin of goat cheese.  A moldy, tangy bleu.  An ooey-gooey melt-in-your-mouth brie or a fresh and creamy fresh goat.

Oh, I love them all.  Never met a French cheese I didn't like!

How 'bout you?  What kind of French cheese do you love?

Happy Love Thursday everyone!

Love Thursday | A Roman Wedding

Nothing says 'I love you' like a wedding!

And while Chris and I were wandering around Trastevere, we decided to take a break by visiting the beautiful church, Santa Maria in Trastevere.

As if the church wasn't beautiful enough, we noticed a lot of buzz taking place in the front of the church.

A videographer, someone hanging flowers at the end of the pews, an organist and singer team practicing.

We both turned to each other and said, "Do you think there's gonna be a wedding?"

The answer was YES!!  Or should I say SI?!?

The wedding ceremony worked a bit differently in Italy.

No bridesmaids.  No groomsmen.

Instead the groom, who was dressed in his Carabinieri best walked down with his mom.

Next came the Mother of the Bride, who unceramoniously strolled down the aisle to her seat, alone.

The grooms Carabinieri buddies in full dress, stood with swords crossed in the alcove as the beautiful bride and her father walked through.

They were preceded by a lone, shy, ringbearer, named Mario.  He was reluctant, fussing, crying and downright adorable in his tiny designer Italian pin-striped suit!

P1020349

How privileged we felt to witness such a wonderful event in such a beautiful, historic setting.

An Italian wedding- what could be lovelier?

Happy Love Thursday, everyone!

Love Thursday: Thoughts, Prayers and Help for L'Aquila

By now, unless you live in a basement, you have heard about the awful earthquake, and subsequent aftershocks in L'Aquila Italy.  So many people, so many historic buildings, so much history gone forever.

There are ways we can show our love, for the Italian residents of L'Aquila.  I was going to write a post on how to help, but rather than duplicate all of the excellent info already floating around the Internets, I decided to provide links to the best information.

But, as I pass along the info I'll add a heartfelt plea for you to help. However you see fit.

Check out the following posts about how you can help:

Jessica from WhyGo Italy

Michelle from Bleeding Espresso

Jessica from Rome Photo Blog

Laura from Ciao Amalfi.

This post will remain a living breathing one, as I will add additional information as it comes to light.

Happy Love Thursday Everyone!

And Grazie Mille in advance, for any and all help you are able to give.

Love Thursday: Twitter Travel Love

This Love Thursday, I wanted to spread some Twitter love.

I spend a considerable amount of time on Twitter. Even more-so now that Facebook has taken a turn for the worst, in my opinion, by trying to be like Twitter.  Posers.

But, I digress.  So, yes, I spend too much time on Twitter.  And though there are many twitterers I follow, today I'd like to provide you a list of my favorite Twitters', who tweet about twavel, oops, I mean travel. Say that five times fast!

Wow, that is quite a list!  That'll keep you all busy for a while!

And if you want a few laughs, this will have you rolling!  It's a link to the funniest tweets on Twitter.

Happy Love Thursday everyone!

My (not so) Love Letter to Rome

Rome

Dear Rome,

I remember the last time we met- just like it was yesterday.  I remember that we fought.  You won. We sorta broke-up.

I never wanted to see you again.  You were *so* not my favorite.

You and your stinking non-existent road signs.  I mean seriously, do you actually want people to visit your damned city?

Were you plotting a cruel trick on me, by not advertising a huge underground parking structure like that?   Do you think that is the best way to say "Welcome to Rome" ?

Send your visitors to drive aimlessly, round and round your ancient city until we were so freakin' exhausted and fed up that we just decided to call it a day and head back from whence we came?

Ah, maybe that's it.  Drive 'em crazy, get 'em lost and then they will leave with a bad taste in their mouth- never to return again!

Not. very. mature.

Perhaps that debacle is all on video tape, to be played in front of a Papal audience, so that they and the Pope could get a good Sunday laugh at the Americans expense? Eh?

Well, it wasn't funny!

You and your ridiculously overpriced everything.  My God Rome, I am not made out of money!  I could've spent a fortune trying to keep up with you.

You and your history, ancient ruins and museums. The Vatican, the Colosseo, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Campodiglio-do you really want me to go on? When your nickname is the Eternal City, I should have guessed it was because it would take an eternity to know you completely.  You are so complicated!

It was constant on-the-go with you. You know I don't enjoy marathon museum hopping. It was all such a whirlwind, that I just couldn't keep up and I was losing myself in the process.  We really never had any *us*time.

You were overwhelming me.  I never caught my breath.

Granted, I didn't spend nearly enough time with you.  Three days is hardly enough time to get to know someone with your depth and 2,000 plus years of stories.  Oh, the stories.

Now, don't get me wrong, I did like quite a few things about you. Your glorious food, your pretty language, your cobblestones, your stunning views, your wine bars, your cafes and your gelato.  Oh My Gawd, your gelato!

I just wasn't quite sure that the good was enough to outweigh the bad. Enough to convince me to give you another chance.

But, thanks to Chris, Delta Airlines, and my friend Miss Expatria, and the fact that I miss my Italy, more than you can imagine, I have decided to do just that.

Lucky You.

But be forewarned. Things will need to be different this go-round, if this is gonna work. Things are gonna need to change.

I am afraid that in the past I had taken a back seat in our relationship.  I gave you total control. And you took it, willingly.

This time you'll be following my rules, Rome.

This time, I'm not driving around with you.  Nope, I will be enjoying the public transportation.  Plane, train, metro and bus.  Oh, and feet.  Lots of walking, vespa-dodging and taking-your-life-in-your-hands-street crossing.

I am not staying in the city center with all the other toursts. No, sir.  I am staying in Monti neighborhood, to see the real you.

Our relationship will not be based on overpriced accomodations, and tourist food that's just not up to par.

Negatory.

If this is gonna work, you better look like seducing me by taking me to all the best local neighborhood joints.

And no marathon history tours, anymore. I'm done with those.  I much prefer to wander and get lost in all the nooks and crannies. We can go to a few churches, maybe the Forum.  I'd even agree to a garden or two.

Rome, I pray that you are reading this. I hope that you will use this chance wisely.  I really do see great things for us in the future.  I can see a beautiful Italian romance, a love-affair to stand the test of time.  I wish with all my heart that I will fall in love with you this time, but you need to prove to me that you are worthy.

Please, don't disappoint me again.

Eternally hopeful,

Robin

Love Thursday: Trashed and Graffiti'd

First, I have to tell you, I have the. best. readers.

No really.  The best.

Yeah, I know, you think all the blogs say that to their readers.

That very well may be true, but I really mean it!

And I am eternally grateful for each and every one of you!

The other day, when I talked about Travel Bordering on the Ridiculous, (which incidentally got picked up by BootsnAll Today and featured on their front page and from there, WorldHum grabbed it for their Travel Blog Morning Links feature) reader Marsi made a comment about something *ridiculous* that she had seen.  She lamented about not being able to post a photo in the comments section.

She wrote:

On our flight home from Paris four years ago, a man and his teenage daughter were seated in front of us. The man suddenly slumped into the aisle. Alarmed, we asked his daughter if he was all right. She said, "Oh yeah. He just took a sleeping pill with Jack Daniels. He's fine."

A few minutes later, she took out a red Sharpie and her video camera and started doodling all over her father's face and filming it! Everyone was laughing, including us, because he was passed out through the whole thing. I have a picture of her work, which I must say is QUITE good, and that is what I wish I could post.

Hours later, we finally land and disembark. We see the father and daughter shortly thereafter, a good dozen or so people ahead of us in the line at Customs. No one has said a word to the man; his daughter is gesturing to everyone behind his back to keep it quiet. He is walking through the airport with graffiti all over his face!

Finally, he and his daughter get to the front of the Customs line and the official takes him out of line and back into an office. He finally emerges, laughing and scrubbing his face while his daughter is nearly doubled over in hysterics.

That is the funniest thing I've ever seen while traveling!

Well, because it is Love Thursday, and because I love my readers and because I love a good laugh- of which I had a long hard one after seeing the photo that I asked Marsi to forward, I present to you:

Trashed and Graffiti'd

Trashed and Graffiti'd

If that is not some funny father-daughter prankster love, I don't know what is!

Thanks Marsi!

And Happy Love Thursday everyone!

Love Thursday: Spring Thaw

It has been a long, cold, snowy Winter here so far in the Northeast.

This past Saturday was one of the first nice sunny days, showing perhaps a glimpse of Spring.

And not a moment to soon.  Especially since the pooch has been feeling rather cooped up (uh, Mom and Dad too) and also recovering from a bit of eyelid surgery.  She is going stir crazy in the house.

We were happy to get out for some fresh air and some exercise on the Vanderbilt Mansion grounds. And I brought my camera along to snap some shots along the way.

Here are a few favorites:

And since it is Love Thursday, I couldn't resist this little ditty peering out on the bottom level of the mansion...

I know I'm a few days early, but better early than late, especially when it comes to Love and Valentine's Day.

I like the idea of taking a day to celebrate the one(s) you Love.  Not that you shouldn't celebrate them everyday!

But today, I'd like to talk to you a little bit about my Valentine.  And, you know who you are.

I am lucky enough to have as my other half, my Number One Fan. He is so supportive of me and my endeavors.  He is the first to hand someone my business card, while I am still fumbling around in my bag for one.

He is always happy to be my editor-in-chief and proofreader, even when it's way past his bedtime and he can't even keep his eyes open.

He often gets stuck with making dinner, cleaning and washing dishes while I am busy writing, working or blogging- and I hear nary a complaint.

He is very independent.  Even does his own laundry.

And he is a good Doggie Daddy!

He doesn't have a lot of money, or a Master's degree, or a fancy car.

He does have a sweet, gentle nature, a fabulous sense of humor, a sexy bald head and a perfect toothy smile.

He is smart, introspective, adorable, respectful and hard-working.  He gives the best hugs and does some of the best impressions and character voices...ever.  He makes me laugh.  Everyday.

His passion is music, he plays drums and guitar and he has an ear for languages.  He listens to opera-Turandot is one of his favorites, he cries when he hears Nessun Dorma.  And he doesn't care that I just shared that with you.

He doesn't mind that our living room has pink throughout and he puts up with my constant redecorating and rearranging of our house.  He shares my flea market madness and my love of Italy.

And he puts up with my snoring.

Who could ask for more really?  Really!

So, to celebrate further, we will be spending a nice day shopping and antiquing and enjoying a nice dinner Italian dinner at Vico.  A full report on this gem will follow!

Happy Love Thursday and Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

How will you be celebrating this year with your Valentine?

love thursday: my french find

It's the dead of winter here, and to my chagrin, not a flea market to be found for miles.  Make that States.

I can't go a whole winter without some sort of antique peeking.  I don't even ned to buy anything..it is just the touching, the looking, the wondering.

This past weekend, I was going to burst if I didn't do some treasure-hunting, so we ventured out into the freezing temperatures and hit one of my favorite spots.

I have found many a treasure at this shop. The couple that run it seem to stock the shop with things that only I dream of owning.

I walked in and my radar quickly honed in on a masterpiece.  It drew me over like a bee to honey.

P1010697

I tried to ignore it.  Even walked past it.

P1010714

But anyone who has an antique fetish will tell you, that it Just. Won't. Work.  Antiques have a way of whispering in your ear, even from far away!

P1010703

I tried to erase it from my mind, but it's gilt gold details had already woven their way deep into my Francophile heart.

P1010698

I tried to convince myself that I didn't need it.  That I had no place to put it.

P1010696

But those lines, those curves, those carvings, oh my!  Beauty trumps practicality...every time.

P1010694

Every collector will always find the place, always make a space.

P1010705

And so several conversations-with-myself later, Chris carried it out to the Mighty Golf, which is a hatchback and home we came.

P1010709

And I am *so* happy to say that I am in love with my new French Find.    My research makes me think that it is a Louis XVI French Vanity Chair.

P1010715

Now, I just have to find that space I mentioned earlier.

Happy Love Thursday everyone!
